How to test your AT&T connection properly

AT&T Fiber is a pure fiber-optic service and generally delivers excellent, consistent performance:

Key characteristic: AT&T Fiber is symmetric - upload matches or closely tracks download. This is a major advantage for video calls, cloud backups, content creation, and remote work, and it is the clearest sign of a healthy fiber connection.
If you have a fiber plan and your upload is a small fraction of your download, something is wrong - usually WiFi, an old router, or a sub-gigabit Ethernet port capping the connection.
AT&T DSL / IPBB: what to expect
Older AT&T DSL and IPBB (Internet Protocol Broadband) services run over copper telephone lines and behave very differently:
- Speeds are much lower - often 5-75 Mbps, sometimes less.
- Speeds drop with distance from the AT&T central office or fiber node.
- Upload is far slower than download.
- Performance is sensitive to line quality - old or wet copper degrades the signal.
If you are on DSL, your measured speed depends heavily on your physical distance to AT&T’s equipment. A neighbor a few streets closer to the exchange may get noticeably faster speeds on the same plan.
Why AT&T tests slow

- Test over Ethernet to separate the AT&T connection from your WiFi.
- Verify your device supports your plan speed - an old laptop with a 100 Mbps port cannot show gigabit speeds regardless of the connection.
- For DSL, minimize in-home wiring - connect the gateway as close to the AT&T demarcation point as possible and avoid long runs of old telephone wire.
- For fiber, check for a sub-gigabit bottleneck - the ONT, Ethernet cable, and your device all need to support gigabit+ speeds.
- Test at different times of day to detect congestion.
When to contact AT&T
Call AT&T if, after testing over Ethernet with no other devices active:
- Fiber speeds are consistently more than 10-20% below plan.
- DSL speeds are far below what your line distance should support.
- You experience frequent dropouts or the gateway reboots itself.
- Speeds suddenly dropped from previously good levels (possible line fault).
For fiber, most “slow speed” complaints trace to in-home WiFi or an outdated gateway rather than the fiber line itself, which is typically rock-solid. For DSL, the line and distance are often the genuine limit, and a technician visit to check the line is worthwhile.
A note on upgrading from DSL to fiber
If you are on slow AT&T DSL, check whether AT&T Fiber is available at your address. AT&T has been aggressively expanding its fiber footprint, and many addresses that previously only had DSL now have fiber - often at similar prices with dramatically better performance.
