High ping is the enemy of anything real-time: gaming, video calls, remote desktop, live streaming. The lag, the rubber-banding, the awkward pauses in conversation - they all trace back to latency. The good news is that most high-ping problems are fixable, and the most effective fixes are also the cheapest. Here are the 8 most effective ways to lower your ping.
First, know your number
Before trying fixes, measure your ping. You need a baseline to know whether your changes actually help. Note the number, then work through the list below. For reference, under 50 ms is good for most uses, and under 20 ms is excellent for gaming.
1. Switch from WiFi to Ethernet
This is the single most effective ping fix, and it is free if you already have a cable. WiFi adds latency, jitter, and packet loss due to wireless overhead and interference. A wired Ethernet connection removes almost all of that.
Impact: Often cuts ping by 10-30 ms and dramatically improves stability. If you only do one thing on this list, do this.
2. Connect to a closer server
Latency is largely a function of physical distance, because data cannot travel faster than light through fiber. If you connect to a game server or service across an ocean, your ping will always be high - no fix at home can overcome geography.
Impact: Choosing a server in your own region instead of a distant one can cut ping by 50-150 ms. Always select the closest server region in games and apps that offer the choice.
3. Close background downloads and uploads
Anything saturating your connection - game downloads, cloud backups, torrent clients, other people streaming - forces your real-time traffic to queue, spiking your ping. This is a frequent cause of “my ping is usually fine but spikes randomly.”
Impact: Eliminating background traffic smooths out ping spikes completely if congestion was the cause. Pause cloud sync and large downloads before gaming or important calls.
4. Use the 5 GHz WiFi band (if you cannot use Ethernet)
If a cable is genuinely impossible, at least use the 5 GHz WiFi band instead of 2.4 GHz. The 5 GHz band has shorter range but far less interference and lower latency, because it is less crowded and supports faster, more efficient transmission.
Impact: Moderate but real - usually 5-15 ms improvement and better stability compared to 2.4 GHz, especially in apartment buildings with many neighboring networks.
5. Enable QoS on your router
Quality of Service (QoS) lets your router prioritize time-sensitive traffic - like games and calls - over bulk downloads. Without QoS, a background update can starve your game of bandwidth; with QoS, the game traffic goes first.
Impact: Prevents household contention from spiking your ping. Look for QoS or “gaming prioritization” settings in your router’s admin interface. Better routers have smarter QoS.
6. Upgrade an old router
A router more than 4-5 years old adds processing delay and struggles to handle multiple real-time streams efficiently. Older WiFi standards (WiFi 4 or early WiFi 5) also have higher latency than WiFi 6.
Impact: A modern WiFi 6 router can shave several ms off latency and, more importantly, reduce jitter and packet loss. This is especially worthwhile if your current router is the free one from your ISP.
7. Check for (and avoid) bad ISP routing
Sometimes your ISP routes traffic to a server through an inefficient path - bouncing between cities or through congested exchange points - adding unnecessary latency. This is the cause when your ping is high to a specific service but fine elsewhere.
Impact: Variable. You cannot fix ISP routing directly, but a gaming VPN that routes around your ISP’s bad path can sometimes help (most general-purpose VPNs add latency, so only specialized ones are worth trying here). Switching ISPs is the definitive fix if routing in your area is genuinely bad.
8. Eliminate local interference and congestion
Beyond your own network, local factors matter:
- Other devices on your network competing for bandwidth.
- 2.4 GHz interference from neighbors, microwaves, Bluetooth, baby monitors.
- Old or long Ethernet cables (a damaged cable can cause retransmissions that feel like lag).
- A saturated upstream from someone else’s uploads.
Impact: Cleaning up the local environment removes a class of intermittent ping spikes that no other fix addresses.
What will NOT lower your ping
Avoid these common myths - they do not help:
- “Speed up” apps and “game booster” software - they cannot change the physical path your data takes.
- Buying a faster internet plan - above a low threshold, more bandwidth does not reduce latency. A 1 Gbps plan has the same ping as a 100 Mbps plan on the same connection.
- Most VPNs - they add a hop, so they increase ping unless they fix specific bad routing.
- Changing DNS - DNS only affects the initial connection lookup, not ongoing latency.
The diagnostic order
Work through the fixes in this order for the best results with the least effort:
- Test over Ethernet (isolates WiFi from everything else).
- Close all background downloads and uploads.
- Connect to the closest server region.
- Enable QoS and check your router.
- Only then consider hardware upgrades or ISP changes.
Run a ping test now, apply the relevant fixes, and test again. The combination of Ethernet + cleared background traffic + a nearby server solves the large majority of high-ping problems without spending any money.
