Video calls are the defining use case of remote work, and they are uniquely demanding in one way: they need very little bandwidth, but they need it rock-stable. A connection that streams 4K video fine can still produce a choppy Zoom call. Here is exactly how much internet speed you need for Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, and FaceTime - and why upload often matters more than download.

It is not just speed - stability matters most

  • Background apps - Cloud sync (iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox) quietly eats upload bandwidth.

How to get flawless calls

  1. Use Ethernet for your work machine, if at all possible. This single change is the most effective.
  2. Pause cloud backups and big downloads during important calls.
  3. Check your upload speed - if it is under 10 Mbps and multiple people call, consider a plan with more upload or fiber.
  4. Upgrade your router or use a mesh system if WiFi is unavoidable.
  5. Run a speed test before important calls to confirm your connection is healthy in that moment.

Measure your own connection

Run a speed test and look at all three numbers - download, upload, and ping. For reliable video calls you want at least 5-10 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up, and ping under 50 ms, with low jitter. If upload is your weak point (common on cable plans), that is almost certainly why your calls suffer.
