One of the most common sources of confusion in internet speeds is the difference between Mbps and MB/s. They look almost identical, they sound the same, and yet they differ by a factor of eight. This single confusion is why millions of people think their internet is slower than what they pay for. Let’s clear it up.

The core difference: bits vs bytes

  • Mbps = megabits per second - a bit is a single binary digit (0 or 1).
  • MB/s = megabytes per second - a byte is 8 bits.

Internet providers advertise speeds in Mbps (megabits) because it produces bigger, more impressive numbers. But file sizes and download progress bars in your browser, Steam, or app store are almost always shown in MB/s (megabytes). So when you compare the two directly, they look mismatched - but they are not.

The conversion: divide by 8

To convert a speed from Mbps to MB/s, simply divide by 8.

MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8

Notice the pattern: a 100 Mbps plan downloads at roughly 12 MB/s, not 100 MB/s. That is not your ISP shortchanging you - that is just the unit conversion.

Why this makes your downloads “look slow”

This is the classic moment of confusion. You buy a 100 Mbps plan, you start downloading a big game, and the progress bar shows 12 MB/s. It feels like you are only getting an eighth of what you paid for.

You are not. You are getting exactly what you paid for. The bar uses bytes; the plan uses bits. 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. The math is consistent - the units are just different.

The same applies to upload: a plan advertised as “20 Mbps upload” means roughly 2.5 MB/s of actual upload throughput.

How to never be confused again

A few practical rules of thumb:

  1. Speed test results and ISP plans are in Mbps (megabits). Always.
  2. File sizes and download progress bars are in MB/s (megabytes). Always.
  3. When comparing the two, divide the Mbps number by 8 to get the equivalent MB/s.
  4. The lowercase “b” vs uppercase “B” matters. Mb = megabits, MB = megabytes. This tiny letter is the entire source of the confusion.

Once you internalize the divide-by-8 rule, you will never be surprised by a “slow” download again.

A worked example

Say you want to download a 50 GB game and you have a 200 Mbps plan.

  1. Convert your plan: 200 Mbps ÷ 8 = 25 MB/s.
  2. Convert the file: 50 GB = 50,000 MB.
  3. Estimate time: 50,000 ÷ 25 = 2,000 seconds ≈ 33 minutes.

If you had assumed 200 MB/s, you would have expected a 4-minute download and been disappointed. The realistic answer is about half an hour - and that is assuming your connection hits full speed, which it often does not (see below).

Why real speeds are lower than the theoretical number

Even after the conversion, your actual download speed is usually below the theoretical maximum. Common reasons:

  • WiFi overhead - Wireless connections lose 20-50% of theoretical throughput to overhead, interference, and distance.
  • Protocol overhead - TCP/IP, encryption, and the application itself consume some of your bandwidth.
  • Server-side limits - The server you are downloading from may cap your speed regardless of your connection.
  • Peak-hour congestion - Shared bandwidth drops in the evening.

So a 100 Mbps plan over WiFi might realistically deliver 8-10 MB/s rather than the theoretical 12.5 MB/s. That is normal, not a fault.

Measure it yourself

The cleanest way to see the relationship is to run a speed test and then immediately start a large download, comparing the test’s Mbps result to your download bar’s MB/s figure. Divide the Mbps by 8 and you will see they line up.

Understanding Mbps vs MB/s removes one of the biggest false alarms in home networking. Your internet is almost certainly faster than it looks - you just have to read the units correctly.
